Wear Valley Digital
Meet Andy Clarke
Founder and Technical Specialist
Founder and Technical Specialist, bringing more than 25 years of experience across websites, web applications, cloud platforms and digital technology.
Andy’s career in web technology began in 1999 as Webmaster for Auto Trader, helping manage its international online presence across the UK, France, Holland, South Africa, Belgium, Norway and Ireland during the early years of the commercial web.
Since then, his career has spanned websites, e-commerce, SaaS platforms, cloud infrastructure, business applications, mobile services and major enterprise systems.
That breadth gives Wear Valley Digital something important: the ability to look beyond the visible website and understand the complete digital service behind it.
Experience across major organisations
Over more than two decades, Andy has worked across retail, automotive, telecommunications, energy, government, public services and enterprise technology.
His career includes work involving organisations such as Auto Trader, Waitrose, Burberry, Clarks, RAC, BT, EDF, SSE, the Environment Agency and the Ministry of Justice, alongside many other commercial and public-sector programmes.

Experience with world-class consultancies
Andy has also worked within and alongside major technology consultancies and delivery organisations, contributing to complex programmes involving large technical teams, multiple suppliers and business-critical systems.
That experience has provided first-hand exposure to how large organisations approach discovery, architecture, delivery, governance, cloud adoption, integration and the operation of digital services at scale.
It also means bringing lessons learned in enterprise environments into WVD projects without burdening smaller businesses with enterprise complexity.

More than websites
A modern website rarely exists on its own.
Behind the page a customer sees may be booking systems, payments, databases, APIs, email services, customer accounts, analytics, third-party platforms, automation and cloud infrastructure.
Andy’s technical background covers many of those layers.
His experience includes AWS and Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, APIs, SQL and NoSQL databases, web servers, application platforms and cloud services.
He has also worked with web technologies and content platforms including HTML, PHP, WordPress, Joomla, Django and Flask, together with enterprise systems such as Salesforce, SAP, Oracle and SharePoint.
That means WVD can think about the whole solution, not simply the front end.
Websites and web applications built around the business
Wear Valley Digital starts with the problem rather than the technology.
Before deciding what should be built, the important questions are:
- What is the business trying to achieve?
- Who will use the service?
- What does the customer journey look like?
- Which tasks consume unnecessary time today?
- What systems already exist?
- Where could automation help?
- What information needs to move between systems?
- What will the solution need to support in the future?
Only then does the technology come into the conversation.
A solution might be a straightforward business website.
Or it might become a booking platform, customer portal, membership system, internal application, online service, business dashboard or a collection of connected systems.
The technology should fit the business rather than forcing the business to fit the technology.
Technical experience across the whole digital service
Andy’s background extends across the different layers involved in building and operating modern digital products.
Web & application development
Experience across websites, web applications, CMS platforms, application frameworks and customer-facing online services.
Cloud & infrastructure
Experience with AWS, Azure, containerised environments, Docker and Kubernetes, alongside traditional server and application infrastructure.
APIs & integrations
Experience working with web services, APIs, SOAP, REST-style services, JSON, XML and systems that need to exchange information reliably.
Data & databases
Experience across SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, MongoDB and other application data environments.
Automation
Automation has been a significant part of Andy’s career, including scripts, automated pipelines, repeatable technical processes and reporting.
For WVD clients, that experience can be applied to removing repetitive administration and connecting business workflows.
Monitoring & optimisation
Experience with platforms including Grafana, AppDynamics, New Relic, Azure Application Insights and Kibana means understanding not only how an application is built, but how it behaves once people start using it.
Search & web visibility
Andy’s background also includes Google Analytics, Google Webmaster Tools, SEO tooling, SERP analysis, Open Graph and front-end optimisation tools including Lighthouse.
This is increasingly important as businesses need to be discoverable not only through traditional search engines, but through AI-powered search and answer platforms.
Engineering thinking without unnecessary complexity
Large organisations often have teams dedicated to architecture, development, infrastructure, security, testing, operations and analytics.
Smaller businesses rarely have that luxury.
Wear Valley Digital brings those disciplines together in a practical way.
The goal is not to make a small project behave like an enterprise IT programme.
It is to take the useful lessons from those environments and apply them proportionately.
That means thinking about:
How it works.
How people use it.
How it connects.
How it performs.
How it can be maintained.
And how it can grow.
Built to do something useful
A website should not exist simply because a business is expected to have one.
It should have a job.
It might generate enquiries.
It might take bookings.
It might sell something.
It might reduce telephone calls.
It might allow customers to manage their own information.
It might automate something that currently requires somebody to copy information between systems.
It might help a business understand what its customers actually do.
Sometimes the best improvement is visual.
Sometimes it is buried deep inside a workflow that the customer never sees.
Both matter.
Performance, testing and reliability
Performance engineering and software testing remain part of Andy’s technical background, but they are not the definition of Wear Valley Digital.
They provide another layer of engineering discipline.
Andy has spent much of his career understanding how digital systems behave under real demand, investigating technical problems, analysing system behaviour and helping teams make applications more reliable. His CV includes extensive experience across performance engineering, automation, application monitoring and cloud environments.
For a WVD customer, the value is simpler:
the application should work properly when people need it.
From the early web to AI-enabled applications
The web Andy started working with in 1999 bears little resemblance to the technology available today.
Static pages became database-driven websites.
Websites became applications.
Applications moved into the cloud.
Services became connected through APIs.
Automation changed how software was delivered.
And now artificial intelligence is changing how people discover information, interact with services and how software itself can be built.
WVD sits at that intersection.
The aim is not to add AI simply because it is fashionable.
It is to identify where modern technology can genuinely make a business easier to run or a service easier to use.
That could mean AI-assisted search, intelligent customer support, document processing, business automation, content workflows or applications capable of working with information in entirely new ways.
A practical engineering approach
Andy has spent much of his career working between technical teams and the people who actually need the technology.
His more recent work has involved gathering and challenging requirements, working with subject-matter experts, developers and infrastructure teams, and helping translate business requirements into deliverable technical solutions.
That same approach sits behind WVD.
Understand first. Design second. Build third.
No unnecessary technology.
No solution looking for a problem.
No jargon barrier between the client and the person actually building the system.
Local roots, UK reach
Wear Valley Digital is based in Weardale, County Durham, with the ability to work with businesses locally or remotely across the UK.
For local businesses, that means something increasingly unusual in technology:
you can actually sit down with the person building your solution.
There is no account-management layer between the conversation and the engineering.
You work directly with Andy from the initial idea through discovery, design, development and delivery.
Bringing enterprise experience to businesses of every size
The organisations may be very different.
The technology may be very different.
But many of the underlying problems are remarkably similar.
Businesses want to attract customers.
They want to reduce unnecessary work.
They want information to move cleanly between systems.
They want their technology to be dependable.
And they want somebody who can understand the problem without making the solution unnecessarily complicated.
That is the experience Wear Valley Digital brings to each project.
Wear Valley Digital
Websites. Web applications. Automation. AI.
Built around the way your business actually works.
